GLA 625 - The History of Photography - Assignments, Midterms and Finals

Late 1800s. Paris. Atget.
Ah well, lets keep this post simple. A course with a laden plate of reading material and formidable amount of written content that needs to be generated. Here are some of the more useful articles and papers.

Photo Essay 1, handouts given in class, to be discussed in class the following week.
"After the End of Art" by Arthur Danto. To be honest this was the first significant reading I had done in years. Getting back to processing intellectual writing that too in a subject like Art History, was something that took me time. The first of the four articles which require you to evaluate the motif and impact photography has had on all visual media and the world around it.

Photo Essay 2, handouts given in class, to be discussed in class the following week
"Photography" by Charles Baudelaire. The second of the four articles.

Short research project #1 - paper (3-4 pages) on a 19th century photographer, with a class presentation.
My randomly picked photographer was Eugรจne Atget. A street photographer in Paris whose work spanned the second half of the 19th century. Paper here.

Original Source reading
My random pick from the lot ended up being "The Decisive moment" by Henri Cartier Bresson. A highly regarded french photographer, arguably the father of modern photojournalism and street photography. The paper submission here.

Take home Mid-terms which requires written material to be submitted to for the questions asked.
The article that was given for reading was "The Ontology of the Photographic Image" by Andre Bazine.

Photo Essay 3, handouts given in class, to be discussed in class the following week
"The work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction" by Walter Benjamin. The third of the four articles.

Photo Essay 4, handouts given in class, to be discussed in class the following week
"The Heroism of Vision" by Susan Sontag. The last of the four articles, intended to probe, push and pummel around your intellectual process and perceptions on Photography.

Short research project #2 - paper (3-4 pages) on a 20th century photographer, with a class presentation.
My randomly picked photographer was William Klein. A multifaceted photographer and movie maker some of whose primary work comes from street and fashion photography in New York among other opaces. Paper here.

Final research project - paper (7-10 pages) on a topic fitting for a masters grade student, with a class presentation.
In line with the happy accidents on street photography related material that I came across so for, I decided to extend it a little further. New York being the rendezvous point for anything street photography, I chose to do a paper on Street Photographers in New York in the 60s and 70s, where I talk about the work of a few significant photographers.

In all honesty the papers I submitted were of no great literary value, but were aimed to meet if not exceed the requirements of the course. The paper along with the presentation and discussion in class with the instructor and the rest of the students holds the true value material, not just the paper alone.
